How do You become A Fashion Designer?

Those who have become established always seem to give the same answer to this question:

There are two classic routes. The first, as ever is to go work directly for a fashion house, where you gradually learn by doing, as an apprentice, work experience students, left or right hands, and by looking over the shoulders of everyone who works there. Even without previous training this path is still available if applicants have something to show: their own design, drawn or sewn, handmade creative accessories such as hats or costume jewelry.

The second classic route is to train at one of the established fashion colleges from which the fashion houses traditionally recruit their young talents.
